Keynote Presentation – Islands’ Place and Space:
A Geographer’s View on Climate Change In Small
Islands
Beate Ratter
Abstract
Small islands are widely regarded as hotspots of climate change and are commonly propagated
as particularly vulnerable to climate change effects. The contribution discusses a geographer's
view on island spatiality in times of climate change and questions the detections and
attributions of climate change impacts. Taking into account place and space, politics and
society, action and reaction, from within and from without, the question arises as to whether
small islands are doomed to be victims.
