A Harbor at the Crossroads

Located in one of Europe's great port cities, the UNESCO Chair on Societal Climate Change Research and Resilience brings together researchers, students, and practitioners from different regions, disciplines, and cultural backgrounds. Like the harbour that has shaped Hamburg for centuries, the Chair is a place of arrival and departure, where ideas, experiences, and perspectives continuously meet and move on. Through dialogue, collaboration, and shared learning, new connections are formed across island and coastal communities around the world. The Chair reflects Hamburg's enduring role as a crossroads where diverse journeys come together and new ones begin.

A House of Dialogue

Perched above the Elbe River, Elsa Brändström Haus offers a setting where reflection, exchange, and shared learning can unfold. During the UNESCO Chair Symposium "Too Small to Survive?", researchers from different islands, disciplines, and cultural backgrounds spent four days living and learning together, largely removed from the distractions and interruptions of everyday life. Through conversations, walks, storytelling, collaborative inquiry, and shared meals, the house became more than a venue, it became a temporary community where diverse perspectives met and new understandings emerged. Its character reflects the importance of creating spaces that allow dialogue, relationships, and ideas to develop over time.
