In July, as part of the activities of the UNESCO Chair on Societal Climate Change Research and Resilience, Dr. Corinna de Guttry led a two-week excursion “UNESCO for Cultural and Natural Heritage in Hamburg and Surroundings” with 20 students from the University of Hamburg. Throughout the program, students visited numerous UNESCO-related initiatives in the Hamburg region and surroundings, gaining valuable insights into the cultural and educational mission of UNESCO.
Highlights included a visit to Gymnasium Grootmoor, one of Hamburg’s five UNESCO Associated Schools, where values such as intercultural learning, democracy education, and sustainability are embedded in everyday teaching. At the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), participants learned about global initiatives in adult education, literacy, and networks such as the Global Alliance for Literacy and the Global Network of Learning Cities. The excursion continued with a presentation of the UNESCO Chair on Societal Climate Change Research and Resilience, where Prof. Dr. Beate Ratter introduced participatory approaches and the innovative Living Geography Labs, which link research with local knowledge to foster resilience to climate change in small islands.
