This July, the UNESCO Chair on Societal Climate Change Research and Resilience (University of Hamburg) participated in Plastic Free July from Skyros Island, Greece, in collaboration with the Skyros Project, the University of West Attica, and the volunteer NGO Why Not.
Reducing plastic use is not enough. With so much plastic already polluting our environment, we took action by collecting it — starting from the beaches of Skyros.
As part of the Summer School of Environmental Educators and the Why Not volunteer group, more than 70 participants joined forces in two large coastal clean-ups, removing plastic waste and marine litter from the island’s shores. These actions were not only symbolic but also deeply practical, reminding us of the responsibility we all share in restoring our ecosystems.
The initiative included hands-on environmental communication workshops and youth engagement activities that aimed to build awareness, knowledge, and a sense of environmental responsibility.
